Caddie Woodlawn

Peter —  March 28, 2012

“Caddie Woodlawn,” written by Carol Ryrie Brink, is a book set in the 1860’s in western Wisconsin. Caddie is a tomboy and loves adventure.

From facing a massacre rumour to mending clocks, to saving the schoolhouse from being burnt by a prairie fire, once you pick up this book you will not be able to put it down. Filled with laughter and adventure, this classic is a great book to read aloud as a family or just to read by yourself.

I like this book because Caddie is very adventurous and brave. I would recommend this book for ages 9 and up.

The Adventures of the Northwoods series, written by Lois Walfrid Johnson, takes place in the early 20th century.  The main character is a lively, curious girl called Kate O’ Connell. Her father is dead and her mother remarries, to a Swedish man who has 2 sons and 1 daughter and lives inWisconsin. Kate does not want her mother to marry again but she gradually gets used to her new Swedish family and their customs. Kate ends up solving an exciting mystery with the help of her older step-brother Anders and his friend Erik. This leads to her solving lots more mysteries. I like the series because Kate is very courageous and because the books are so exciting.  I would recommend the series for ages 9 and up.

(NOTE:  The books were my mom’s when she was a little girl.  There are 10 books in the series.)

Trailblazer Books

Peter —  March 28, 2012

Would you like to travel back in time and meet John Wesley or Gladys Alward? If you would then you are the person to read the Trailblazer Books. The Trailblazer Books written by Dave and Neta Jackson are a series about Christian heroes through history. Each book is about a different person and they are written from the eyes of a fictitious child.  I like the series because the books are so exciting and because some of them are about missionaries. I would recommend the series for ages 10 and up.

*Note – Parents should probably check the books over before their children read them because sometimes the books can be quite violent.
