In case you haven’t seen it yet, the new Cor Deo website is now online.  Please take a look if you have a minute.  We will be sending out Cor Deo updates once a month, if you’d like to receive those updates, please email us and let us know.  We’d be delighted to keep you in the loop as things progress!

(Also, if you know of someone who might be a potential participant, please introduce us to them.  We are now in the process of connecting with potential participants for next year.  Thanks for helping us with this!)

We are enjoying having Peter back . . . I am so blessed with a truly wonderful husband.  This morning he has given me a morning “off” to relax and catch up on some things while he does schooling with the children.  I have spent quite a bit of time writing some book reviews for our bookshelf (watch for them to appear soon), reading some very good blogs and now am putting these photos on the web.  This afternoon, I am going to have a Bible study with my friend Priscilla – I have been very blessed and encouraged by our weekly times together.  We have just finished studying James and now we are starting 1 Peter.  God’s word is truly our life and breath and I long to know it and feast on it more.  Tonight I get to go and meet with the ladies from our homeschool club for some fellowship.  I guess today I am being thoroughly spoiled with time “off.”  This week is looking very busy so hopefully it will recharge the batteries for the busy days to come.  Here are the photos:

Our giant snowman built during the snowy days of January (they have now passed and been replaced by the rainy days of January!)

Peter wanted me to take a side-view photo so you could see the snowman’s parsnip nose! :-)   He also had prunes for eyes, smile and buttons, and red peppers for ears! Of course, he had to wear Daddy’s Man U scarf.

They also built a big snowfort, from which to launch their snowball weapons. (They were playing the English vs. the Saxons so yes, it was an educational activity!)

Check out this icicle!  It was nearly as tall as Joel!  Peter broke it off through one of the upstairs windows so it wouldn’t fall and pierce our lawnmower shed.

What a Great Weekend!

Posted in Ministry Report on January 24th, 2010 by Peter

Aliyah and I just returned from Otford Manor (or Awkward Manners as Joel referred to it yesterday!)  We had a great weekend.  The place was full of eager participants in a weekend of studying the Gospels.  It’s such a blessing to be around people who are hungry for the Bible, and hungry to know Jesus more.  The sessions seemed to go well and I was very encouraged.

Now for an evening with the family and trying not to think about the week ahead.  (If I did think about it I would probably be thinking about meetings with people, including some time with Ron Frost for a Cor Deo planning meeting, the first Getting More study on Wednesday and then a weekend in Coventry, plus a lot of admin in the gaps . . . but I’m not thinking about that for now!)

Weekend at Otford

Posted in Ministry Report, Prayer Request on January 22nd, 2010 by Peter

This evening Aliyah and I are heading over to Otford Manor for an Unlocking the Bible Weekend.  It only seems like 36 hours since I got back from Germany . . . which it is.  The conference in Germany went well and I am excited about the latest group of new recruits heading out across the world this weekend (please pray for them!)  So now to Otford.  About half an hour drive away, Otford Manor (or Oak Hall) is a beautiful old country manor in a beautiful setting.  I didn’t speak there in 2009, so it is good to be back for one weekend in 2010.

The timing of the weekend must be good, as the place is full.  Aliyah is joining me (Hannah did last time in September 2008) – so she’ll be sleeping on the floor in my room, hanging around and hopefully blessing folks with her smile and helpfulness.  I speak once this evening, four times tomorrow, then a couple of sessions on Sunday morning . . . so it is a busy time.  The subject is a great one though – Getting to Grips with the Gospels.  No hope of covering everything that probably needs to be covered, but I’m excited about what we do get to cover together.

Please pray for the weekend to go really well and for everyone to not only encounter each other in a beautiful setting, but to encounter the Lord in a fresh way as we look at four wonderful books of the Bible that speak of Him!

(Incidentally, UK folks, if you haven’t signed the online petition about the Equality Bill . . . please do so immediately.  If this gets through as it stands the implications will be shocking!  Here’s a good place to get a bit of background and to direct you on to the petition site -ccfon.org)

Politician-ing the environment

Posted in Family Funny, Prayer Request on January 20th, 2010 by Melanie

Here is a “funny” from this afternoon:

We were discussing environments in science today.  Hannah piped up, “You shouldn’t politician the environment.”  I smiled and explained that a politician is someone who works in government and the word she wanted was “pollute” which means to make something dirty or mess it up.  “Well,” she said, “Sometimes politicians make things dirty.”  I laughed and had to agree that she was right.

(It was easy for me to agree as I have been following the progress of the bill that is set to change homeschooling regulations in this country.  The bill has been rushed through, used mounds of faulty evidence and the “polluters” have completely ignored the will of the people on this matter.  Then there is the sex education clause of the bill  and the “Equality” bill currently in the House of Lords . . . I could go on, but I will spare you  . . . Yes, I would say that certain politicians are definitely messing things up!)  If you are in the USA or elsewhere, spend a moment today to intercede for the UK – that our leaders will make wise and godly decisions and that evil plans will be thwarted.

Dandelion’s Great Escape

Posted in Family News on January 17th, 2010 by Melanie

So far, our time with Peter away has gone fairly smoothly.  Yesterday we had a lazy day at home, reading, doing puzzles, playing games and then the children did some painting in the afternoon.  Last night, Joel’s bear-bear disappeared (again!) and we could not find him despite extensive hunting!  Joel took awhile to fall asleep and woke up once in the night crying (he was probably missing bear-bear even though he couldn’t verbalize to me what was wrong) but actually took his nap OK today without his furry friend. We’ve been continuing to pray that he would turn up (Cast ALL your cares – including lost bear-bears – on Him for He cares for you.) Keep reading for the conclusion of the bear-bear saga . . .

This afternoon, Hannah and Aliyah took advantage of the sunny weather and decided to clean out the rabbits’ hutch.  About 5pm when it was nearly dark, Aliyah appeared at the back door and shouted, “Dandy is gone!  She’s run away!”  Because there has been so much snow on the ground, the girls haven’t let the rabbits out in the garden much.  So today when she let Dandelion (Dandy) out for a run, Dandy really ran!  We have a fence panel missing between us and our neighbour’s garden and she has one missing between her and her neighbour’s garden!  So Dandy took the quickest escape route she possibly could and ended up 3 gardens away.  The end of that garden is very wild, filled with brambles and thick bushes AND a fox den – NOT a very safe place for a rabbit to hide.  But that is exactly where she went.  Hannah saw her disappear into the bushes. For the next hour, we shone flashlights all over the area.  Dandy briefly reappeared at the end of the garden when a dog began barking like crazy (I ran like the wind to the neighbours to let them know what was going on and to ask them to bring their dog inside so it wouldn’t attack poor Dandy!)  Those neighbours were very kind and ended up helping us catch her in the end.  My next door neighbour was also very helpful.  For most of the hour, we couldn’t see Dandy and didn’t know where she was – we just kept hoping she would come out of the dense brush and bushes.  Many desperate prayers went up from two distraught little girls (and their worried mummy!) and God answered!  What a relief.  Dandy did not seem too happy to be rescued and nipped Hannah all the way back to the hutch.  (Hmmm.  How like Dandy are we sometimes when God rescues us from the messes we make? . . . point to ponder)  We will not be letting Dandy out again until we get the fence panel replaced and/or build a run for the rabbits (project for Daddy when he comes home!)

Dinner was late because of Dandy’s adventures and I finally got the children in bed.  Joel was not a happy boy without bear-bear.  He ended up with another stuffed bear (Aliyah assured him the bear was bear-bear’s cousin), a stuffed frog, and a stuffed hippo.  They were not cutting the mustard for Joel.  After going in to their room several times to respond to various complaints and unhappiness, about 9pm I finally switched on the light and decided to have one last look for bear-bear.  After a few minutes Hannah and Aliyah came running in because they heard my happy cry, “Here he is!!”  He was on the top shelf in the closet on top of the spare blankets.  Hannah looked a little sheepish and said, “Oh, that’s where I put him.”  It turns out that she put him up there when she was trying to get Joel to put his pajamas on last night.  All in a day’s work as a mum – catching rabbits, finding lost bears – did I sign up for this?  (I wrote that with a smile, by the way!)

Now it’s time to get some sleep.  Thanks for praying for us while Peter is gone.  I just talked to him and he said it’s going very well and he had heard lots of encouraging feedback from his message this morning on “The Uniqueness of Christ.”  All glory to Jesus . . . we press on for Him!

Off to Germany

Posted in Prayer Request on January 14th, 2010 by Peter

Tomorrow I’m heading over to Germany to join the OM new recruits conference.  I haven’t heard how many there are, but it will be good to participate in the January conference for the first time.  I speak at least once every day from Saturday until Tuesday.  If I can get online I will try to update the site.  Please pray for safe travel (planes, trains, and automobiles), for ministry that pleases the Lord and is empowered by Him, for good connections with people at the conference, and for Melanie with the family at home.  Thanks!

Consider It Pure Joy, Peter

Posted in Family News on January 11th, 2010 by Peter

When you discover that the document you worked on for several hours last week somehow got closed without being saved, there is no back-up and the work is lost.  For you know that the testing of your attitude produces a better one in the long-term, if you don’t let it wind you up too much in the short-term, but instead try to look to God whose work on you is worth more than your work on that document, even though it doesn’t feel like it right now.

Snowy Travel

Posted in Ministry Report on January 10th, 2010 by Peter

We’ve still got lots of snow around (by UK standards) although the main roads are ok.  Last night I was scheduled to speak in west London, about 45 minutes by car.  The forecast was bad for last night and it can be a challenge to get up the hill to Caterham, so I decided to travel by train instead.  I left the car at the station and knew I might have to leave it there and walk home.  Thankfully it wasn’t a problem, and although the fifteen minute wait at Clapham Junction felt like standing in frozen wind tunnel (I would imagine), I was able to get home without problem.  So despite the plan B travel plans, it was a good evening, not least to spend time with a friend who has invited me to be a part of teaching a preacher’s club/course that he is launching, and then to enjoy the encouragement of conversation with some at the meeting.  This evening I have stepped in for a speaker who had to cancel because of the weather at a church in Dorking.  I’m looking forward to that and then a few days to get as much done as possible before I head over to Germany on Friday for the OM conference.  Hope you have a great week!
