An Eclectic Meal at the Meads

Posted in Family Funny on January 30th, 2009 by Peter

This evening’s meal was quite interesting.  The food was fine, and a tad diverse, but that’s not what I’m referring to.  (By diverse I mean vegetable juice, rice blinis, hard boiled eggs, salad, pear, kiwi . . . that kind of diverse.)  At one point after most of the eating was done and we were sitting around listening to Aliyah read from a children’s devotional book (we didn’t read over breakfast today), Hannah was braiding Melanie’s hair into four chunky braids, Mariah was eating through a bowl of tomatoes intended for all of us, Joel was sitting in his high chair wearing only a pair of stars and stripes swimming shorts, covering his eyes and saying “More! More!”(they played swimming before dinner – in the living room with cushions for water), and I was periodically spraying Joel from across the room with a jet of water from a spray bottle usually used for morning hair creations.  I know, I shouldn’t distract Joel from devotional readings by his sister, but it was a fun and eclectic meal experience!  Anyone want to come over for dinner sometime?  It will be interesting, but we can’t guarantee quiet!

Writing, Now Preparing

Posted in Ministry Report, Prayer Request on January 28th, 2009 by Peter

The last week has been kept free to allow me some time to write.  I’ve appreciated that, although naturally it was interrupted (PC problem . . . now fixed, despite time kept on the phone trying to get through to the warranty people – they will get the bill even though they didn’t authorize the fix, but whether they pay up or not is a different matter!)  Now I need to switch back into preparation mode.  It’s Isaiah study this evening – what a great book that is!  Then I switch to Sunday as my focus, the first of three on “Jesus – More Than …”  This week Jesus is more than a healer.  There are some unique challenges with this series, so I’d appreciate your prayer for that.  Not sure what else to report.  I was just thinking that I’m very thankful the back issues I had last year seem to be resolved now, which is a real relief.

Update on the Little People

Posted in Family News on January 24th, 2009 by Melanie

Children are born “persons.”  This was one of the beliefs of Charlotte Mason, the 19th century educator that I appreciate a lot.  On first reading, it seems obvious, but I like the emphasis.  Our kids are people just like us, worthy of value and respect.  A friend told me once that her mom liked to call her younger siblings, the “little people,” cause they really are amazing people.  Anyway, I’ve had a good week with the little people – a “normal” week in a lot of ways.  It’s had its ups and downs, of course.  As usual, we did most of our formal school during Monday through Thursday and took Friday to finish up a few things and relax a bit too.  For most of the year so far, we’ve been studying ancient Egypt, and we came to the end of that unit this week.  We will start on ancient Greece on Monday.  A friend just gave us an awesome map that shows Moses’ journey from Egypt to Canaan which will be superb as we review Egypt a bit and help us as we start reading Exodus (we just came to Genesis 50 today).  The kids have been loving Genesis and usually beg us for more when we say it’s time to stop. (We started a couple months ago – not when the Daily Reader started, so we’ve been going at a slower pace.)  The girls are doing really well in their maths and language arts work and are usually really eager to work (this is a change from how things were a year or two ago!).  I feel so privileged to be able to spend my days with them and teach them.  Of course, we have our “days” when things aren’t so easy, but for the most part, teaching them is a delight!  Education is not just about bookwork though.  Since they are around here all day, many opportunities come up for character building and learning life skills.  Both Hannah and Aliyah are getting really into cooking lately.  I am excited that they are excited about it (I see budding cooks that will replace me someday!).  They are also loving listening to stories on tape and cd, some of which were mine when I was a little girl (the tapes of course!).  If you have good recommendations of titles, I’m all ears.

As I am typing this, Peter has been sitting here reading “Henry Huggins” aloud to the girls (by Beverly Cleary).  I think our times reading to the girls are some of our most cherished family times.  Mariah and Joel also eat up any book we will read to them.  You can often hear Joel saying, “Read it, Read it,” while clutching a book.  He is becoming very verbal and is also quite the little clown and loves to entertain people (he’s the 4th kid and only boy, so go figure!).  Mariah also keeps us laughing. . . she prayed this prayer recently, “Dear God I thank you for all the people going to the circus, that they would get their tickets and all the people on the train that they would get their tickets.” (This was totally random, not connected to anything we had talked about.) She ended it with, “And I thank you for the sad animals.”  (NOTE: She prefaces everything with “thank you.”) I asked her why she wanted to pray for the sad animals and she said very matter-of-factly, “Well, God can help them.” Duh, Mom.    All the girls are very excited about their birthdays coming up in a few weeks.  Today they had “dates” with Daddy, who took them out to buy each other birthday presents.  Very cute.  This year, we decided that instead of parties, we will take them each out individually for a special outing, just with mom and dad.  Aliyah’s going to the science museum, Mariah to a children’s farm and Hannah horseback riding (if I can get it organized).  Lest I paint a picture of a perfect family life, we want to ask for your prayers for all 4 of them.  We have been dealing with some lying/deceiving issues with the kids lately and it has been tough.  Pray for wisdom for us and for soft hearts for them.  We love our job as parents but press on with fear and trembling knowing that the Lord is the one who molds hearts.  Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain that build it.

I’m Excited About Today

Posted in Family News on January 23rd, 2009 by Peter

Normally on a Friday I am pulling things together for a weekend of ministry.  Not today.  This weekend is clear, deliberately so.  This means that today I can sit somewhere and type.  One project for one whole day.  As long as I don’t get distracted or have a crisis at home it should be a good productive day.  Meanwhile, on the horizon, another exciting possibility has come my way for later in the spring.  I’ll tell more in due course, but it is definitely an exciting prospect to be involved in something new and highly strategic.  Now then, can I get out of the door without a crisis presenting itself . . . ?

The Blessing of Connecting

Posted in Prayer Request on January 20th, 2009 by Peter

In recent weeks I have been able to meet some good people.  I suppose it comes from being in the country a while (four years now on this stay!)  Today I took a train into London and met with a good man who ministers at a well-known London church, is passionate about missions and oversees an aspect of a ministry that I am excited to connect with.  More information in due course.  When something is confirmed, I’ll let you know.  Meanwhile praise the Lord for these strategic connections and please pray for the right ministry opportunities to come to fruition.  Thanks!

A Really Excellent Weekend

Posted in Ministry Report on January 19th, 2009 by Peter

I arrived home safely last night at 11pm.  It was a real blessing to be in Coventry at Bethel Evangelical Church.  Saturday’s seminar seemed to go well with 27 attending.  It was good to connect in person during the breaks and I enjoyed the enthusiasm of the church for the Bible.  It is refreshing to be around people passionate for God’s Word!  Sunday went well too, with preaching in the morning and the evening.  Add in great hospitality, new friendships, etc. and it was a really excellent weekend!  If you prayed for this, or for me, thank you.  Melanie had a good weekend with the little Meads, but they’re all happy to have me back (which is always reassuring!)  Today is a day off, so I’ll be hanging out with the children this morning, and maybe get a chance to read this afternoon.  Tomorrow I have a meeting with a contact in London – potentially a strategic connection for ministry.  I’d appreciate your prayer for that.  Thanks.

To Coventry

Posted in Prayer Request on January 16th, 2009 by Peter

This evening I head up to Coventry (just over 2 hours without traffic, which there will be).  Tomorrow I lead an all day Bible teaching seminar (as in teaching them to teach the Bible), then Sunday I speak at both services.  Haven’t been to the church before, but am looking forward to it.  I’ll be home Sunday night.

Update Update Update

Sickness - it looks like the Sunday morning episode with Aliyah was a one-off.  Hopefully.

Bookshelf - one of the books on Peter’s bookshelf (The Future of Justification) is actually available free on the internet, the link has been added to that page.

Ministry - I preached without much notice yesterday at Forest Hill, and tonight we begin the new Getting More Bible Study.  We have a great group of people signed up for that, and one of the best Bible books to study together . . . Isaiah!

Museums, Seminar, Sickness?

Posted in Family News, Ministry Report on January 11th, 2009 by Peter

It’s been a busy weekend, but overall a good one.  Yesterday I led a seminar on preaching biblical narrative at a church in Guildford.  I have really enjoyed preparing for this seminar and hope that I’ll have opportunity to teach this more focused subject again at some point.  Meanwhile, Melanie took the four children to the Horniman Museum near the OM office.  They took a friend from church and had a great time.  Last night was interrupted multiple times, by crying children.  It was mostly nothing, but but culminated with Aliyah being sick again.  It’s been 18 days since we had the sickness in the house and we thought we were clear. of it.  Hopefully this is just a blip, but we’ll have to wait and see.  Please pray that we don’t have to go through multiple spells episodes again as before.  This morning I preached a narrative (Gen.32) at the church in Guildford.  We’ve had a relaxing afternoon and Aliyah seems much better . . . we’ll see how the night goes!
